Clive Barker's Jericho playable demo now live
Posted by M @ 10:01 p.m. NZST

Prepare to confront evil and then blast its face off as Codemasters announces the release of the Clive Barker's Jericho playable demo.
The demo is now available for PC and from Xbox Live Marketplace for the Xbox 360 and PC. The demo will be available for PlayStation 3 computer on October 4th from the PlayStation Network.
Clive Barker's Jericho dispatches players to the Middle-Eastern city of Al-Khali. Controlling the Jericho squad, a team skilled in both conventional and paranormal warfare, players fight through different time periods from the city's history on a gruelling journey to unravel the legend of the First Born, Jaweh's first aborted creation of man and source of ultimate evil.
Thrusting gamers into the heart of this unique horror FPS, the demo is taken from the time of the Crusades in Al-Khali's past. A vicious attack has divided the squad, with one half presumed lost. As the demo opens, players join Sergeant Billie Church, Lieutenant Abigail Black and Sergeant Frank Delgado in the blood-drenched sewers and catacombs of a fortress.
Playing as Captain Devin Ross, the fallen squad leader who as a spirit is able to possess and heal individual members of the team, players must take advantage of Church, Black and Delgado's paranormal talents.
- Delgado, a pyromancer and heavy weapons expert, can unleash a parasitic flame spirit to incinerate nearby enemies and wields a 7.62 calibre Minigun.
- Church, a blood scribe, casts powerful wards, enchantments and banishments through the ritual of drawing her own blood. She also comes equipped with a customised Nodachi for ruthless melee attacks.
- Black possesses astonishing telekentic powers, which lets her guide bullets fired from her customised XM-110 sniper rifle with pinpoint accuracy through multiple targets.
Only by combining the unique squad abilities of this paranormal fighting force can gamers survive this hellish nightmare and come closer to the truth.
Right from the off, players face a vicious onslaught from an army of grotesque crusader warriors. These twisted and tormented enemies, whose armour is fused with their rotting flesh and limbs replaced with axes and swords, are powerful, realisations of monsters from the mind of Clive Barker.
Developed by Mercury Steam Entertainment, Clive Barker's Jericho will unleash its supernatural assault from October 26th.

Activision has acquired UK-based developer Bizarre Creations, a leader in the racing category, a US$1.4 billion market that is the fourth most popular video game genre and represents more than 10 per cent of the total video game market worldwide.
This acquisition represents the latest step in Activision's ongoing strategy to enter new genres. Last year, Activision entered the music rhythm genre through its acquisition of RedOctane's Guitar Hero franchise, which is one of the fastest growing franchises in the video game industry.
With more than 10 years' experience in the racing genre, Bizarre Creations is the developer of the innovative multi-million unit franchise Project Gotham Racing, a critically-acclaimed series for the Xbox and Xbox 360. The Project Gotham Racing franchise is owned by Microsoft.
Bizarre Creations is currently finishing development on third-person action game The Club, for Sega, which is due to be released early 2008. They are also the creators of the top-selling arcade game series Geometry Wars on Xbox Live Arcade.
Bizarre Creations and its games have won numerous industry awards including Best Racing Game for Project Gotham Racing 2 from the prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc., commented, "Bizarre Creations will play an important role in our growth strategy as we develop an original new intellectual property for this important racing segment, expand our portfolio in other genres and utilise their proprietary technology for cross platform development."
Martyn Chudley, Managing Director of Bizarre Creations, added, "Our goal at Bizarre Creations has always been to do all we can to nurture our creative and passionate teams, who excel at and enjoy what they do. Their financial support and marketing prowess will also enable us to build upon the commercial success that we currently enjoy, and take the company - and our games - to an even higher level."
Under the terms of the acquisition, Bizarre Creations will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision and the company's management team and employees continue with the company as their teams start to develop two new titles alongside their current projects. The 160-strong development studio is located in Liverpool, England. Activision expects that its first game from Bizarre Creations will be released after fiscal year 2009.

Sex Pistols re-recording for GHIII
Posted by M @ 1:57 a.m. NZST

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees the Sex Pistols, who famously turned down the award, recently returned to the studio to re-record Anarchy in the UK, which will be included in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock as a master track. Now, fans can perform their own live version of the punk anthem in the next installment of the #1 best-selling music and rhythm video game franchise.
The Sex Pistols were an obvious choice for Guitar Hero, having established themselves as the definitive punk band of the 1970s. Unable to locate the original multi-tracks for inclusion in the game, Activision invited the band back into the studio to re-record a couple of songs including Anarchy in the UK. Original members John Lydon on vocals, guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook re-teamed with producer Chris Thomas, utilising the original analogue sound desk (circa 1969) that was built for George Martin at Air Studios, London, England in order to maintain the classic sound.
Thirty years ago this Spring, the song was first included on the Sex Pistols' only studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, which will be re-issued on vinyl on October 29, 2007, in its exact original format, including poster and Submission 7". The single Anarchy in the UK will also be re-issued on vinyl on October 1, along with three other classic singles throughout October. Celebrating this milestone, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock will be sponsoring the historic Sex Pistols show at the Brixton Academy in London taking place on November 8.
John Lydon stated that "Re-recording them [the songs]-what a stress you put on us but we rose to the occasion I think...admirably!" adding that "a bit of anarchy in a video game is alright by me."
"It was great for Guitar Hero to, in a way, get us back in the studio. I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out but it actually turned out great and I think everyone held their own," said Steve Jones. "I like it [Guitar Hero] because my friends' kids like it. And I like what kids like."
"Guitar Hero fans have been requesting more punk rock in the game since its first iteration," says Tim Riley, Activision worldwide executive of music. "We are honoured that the Sex Pistols went into the studio after 30 years so that we could have a song from the most renowned punk band of all time in the game."
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock will include explosive new content and features including a multiplayer action-inspired battle mode, gruelling boss battles, a host of exclusive unlockable content and visually stunning rock venues. Expanded online multiplayer game modes will also allow axe-shredders worldwide to compete head-to-head for true legendary rock status. For the first time ever, Guitar Hero fans will also be able to thrash and burn with new wireless guitar controllers available for each platform. The game will feature a star-studded soundtrack including master tracks by such legendary artists as Guns N' Roses, Rolling Stones, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam as well as original songs by guitar icons Slash and Tom Morello. The sequel also will offer a vast array of downloadable content including songs from some of the most popular European bands.

Ubisoft has announced the creation of a new Tom Clancy franchise being developed by Ubisoft's Bucharest studio for next generation consoles and PC. The first air combat game taking place in Tom Clancy's universe, the brand will launch in 2008.
"Ubisoft has an unrivalled track record of creating and sustaining new brands," said Serge Hascoet, chief creative officer at Ubisoft. With this new brand we're redefining the aerial combat genre and extending the Tom Clancy universe to deliver a compelling new action titles to next-generation gamers."
Set in the near future, the game imagines a world where a private military force has accumulated such power that it attacks the USA. Thrust into the cockpits of incredibly powerful and technologically advanced jet fighters, gamers will benefit from hi-tech piloting assistance, providing comfort, security and enhanced perception. As players gain skills and confidence, they will be able to shed the assistance. But before choosing performance over security, they'll have to weigh the risks carefully.

Classic fighting trilogy coming to PlayStation 2
Posted by M @ 3:07 a.m. NZST

SNK Playmore and Ignition Entertainment have announced the release of the Art of Fighting Anthology for PlayStation 2.
Originally released in 1992, Art of Fighting was the first title in the NeoGeo '100 Mega Shock' series, and set new standards within the fighting genre. With the introduction of the then new Spirit Gauge, Super Special Moves, use of the 'zoom in/zoom out' function and battle damage to the characters faces, the AOF series soon built a solid fan base which is still going strong today.
The anthology contains Art of Fighting, Art of Fighting 2 and the first appearance of Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior away from the original NeoGeo platform. The success of these titles has seen many of its characters cross over into SNK's other major fighting franchise, King of Fighters.
"Upon its release Art of Fighting raised the bar in the fighting genre with the inclusion of many new features that are today now commonplace," says Peter Rollinson, Product Manager, Ignition Entertainment. "With all three games included, this will be a valuable package for any fighting game fan."
Key features:
- Arcade perfect conversions
- All three games on one disc
- Total of 33 characters, each with his own unique fighting style
- Colour edit mode – Customise your favourite character
Art of Fighting Anthology for the PlayStation 2 is scheduled for release this Summer.

Geon Emotions first Live Arcade game for Eidos
Posted by M @ 12:02 a.m. NZST

Tonight Eidos Interactive has released its first title for Xbox Live Arcade.
Released through the publisher's fast-growing New Media Division, Geon Emotions is a mix of fast-paced futuresport and tactical play. Developed and co-published by Strawdog Studios, Geon Emotions invites gamers to play as one of eight feelings: rage, passion, fear, envy, rapture, courage, bliss and melancholy – each of which enters the game with varying strengths and weaknesses.
The action is set across a number of visually striking 3D play areas, broken up into grids that feature tight corners, sweeping loops and raised banks. Having selected an emotion, players race around the psychedelic play area attempting to gather special 'E-Mote' pellets to increase their emotion's strength or to weaken their opponents, thus allowing them to reach an end zone and score goals while their rivals are stricken.
Geon Emotions features six game modes, with single-players facing 'Time Attacks' and 'Duels' while up to four people can compete in split-screen competitions that allow them to work together or battle it out in 'Last Man Standing' deathmatches. Each game begins with players rushing to collect E-Motes before using their specific powers to debilitate the opposition.
The use of E-Motes allows players to exploit the weakness of the emotions the CPU or rival players control. Rage, for instance, can be sedated with a powered-up Bliss attack, while Passion can be similarly tempered with a blast of Melancholy. With the opposition in disarray, the player can then charge across the two-sided play area to score the five goals needed to win the match.

Force Unleashed releasing next Autumn
Posted by M @ 11:40 p.m. NZST

LucasArts has revealed that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will come to the Wii next Autumn, offering owners the unique chance to live out their Jedi fantasies by wielding the Wii Remote as a lightsaber while using the Nunchuk controller to torment foes with their Force powers.
The Force Unleashed casts players as Darth Vader's secret apprentice and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The game's expansive story is set during the largely unexplored era between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.
The Wii version, in development by Krome Studios, will also add an exclusive duel mode in which players can compete head-to-head with their friends to determine the ultimate Jedi Master.
"The Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console's motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts. "We've worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force."
Force Unleashed is the first new-generation game developed internally at LucasArts, and will be available on the Xbox 360 and PS3. As its name implies, Force Unleashed completely re-imagines the scope and scale of the Force by taking advantage of newly developed technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time: Digital Molecular Matter, by Pixelux Entertainment, and Euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd.
"The combination of our great story, memorable characters, and the revolutionary new technology that we're introducing will deliver something Star Wars fans have never seen before, in addition to attracting newcomers to gaming, something that is very important to us," added Ward.
LucasArts and developer Krome Studios are also creating Force Unleashed on the Wii, PlayStation 2 and PSP, and n-Space, Inc., is developing a version for the Nintendo DS. All will feature the same storyline, with opportunities to unleash the Force in devastating new ways.
Working with Lucas Licensing, LucasArts is preparing an unprecedented promotional effort around the launch of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, encompassing a full line of toys and game-based action figures from Hasbro.

iTunes soundtrack for PSP's Dead Head Fred
Posted by M @ 11:04 p.m. NZST

Lakeshore Records has announced the original soundtrack to the PSP third person action game Dead Head Fred, developed by Vicious Cycle Software, is now available at the Apple iTunes music store.
The Dead Head Fred Original Soundtrack includes nearly 40 minutes of music encapsulating the "unique, often sublime" atmosphere of the game's 'twisted noir' setting. Written and produced by veteran video game composers Rod Abernethy and Jason Graves, Lakeshore says the game's score blends cinematic orchestrations with a dark panorama of jazz, southwestern guitar, ambient, rock fusion and other seemingly disparate music styles into a cohesive and alluring listening experience.
"When we went to Rednote Audio we already knew a lot about Dead Head Fred and Hope Falls but we didn't know what Fred's world sounded like," said Adam Cogan, Game Designer, Vicious Cycle Software, Inc. "Luckily, Rod Abernethy and Jason Graves at Rednote Audio did. They far exceeded our expectations and managed to create scores that are every bit as original and distinctive as Fred is."
Created specifically for the PlayStation Portable, Dead Head Fred draws players into an original 1940s inspired alternative universe where players experience an twist on action gameplay as cranium-impaired hero Fred Neuman, collecting, upgrading and strategically switching his head with the heads of enemies to battle through a story of revenge and redemption.
Mark Reis, Senior Sound Designer at Vicious Cycle Software, Inc., added: "Working with Rod and Jason is always a joy and their contribution to Dead Head Fred added flavour and depth that complemented the sound design and voice acting. The edgy soundtrack is a perfect accompaniment to the twisted noir world of Dead Head Fred."

New Chinese studio for Ubisoft
Posted by M @ 11:39 p.m. NZST

Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, has opened a new video game development studio in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Richard Tsao, senior producer at Ubisoft's Shanghai studio, has been appointed managing director of the new studio. Ubisoft Chengdu will initially focus on internal outsourcing and in time will be responsible for developing online titles for PC, consoles and handhelds.
The opening of the new studio was celebrated today at a signing ceremony with Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer of Ubisoft, as well as the Party Secretary of Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone, Mr. Jing Gang and Mr. Han Chun Lin, Director of Chengdu's Hi-Tech Zone.
Following on its history of success in China, with Ubisoft's Shanghai studio already the second-largest Ubisoft development team in the world, the new studio in Chengdu will open its doors in Tianfu Software Park with 10 team members and the goal of expanding to 200 developers over the next year.
Chengdu, with over 35,000 software programming graduates per year, is one of the most technologically developed cities in Western China, offering long-term growth opportunities based on a talented and highly educated local population. With its cutting-edge infrastructure and a local Hi-Tech Zone, Chengdu attracts international companies from all over the world.
"The success of our studio in Shanghai, which has been further confirmed with the launch of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for the PlayStation 3 system, has encouraged us to extend our growth in China," said Christine Burgess-Quémard, executive director, Worldwide Studios at Ubisoft. "We are convinced that Chengdu offers the perfect environment for our expansion, offering a great number of highly educated and talented people."
Richard Tsao's career in games development began at Microsoft, where he helped to ship games such as Dungeon Siege and Mech Warrior 4. He then moved to Crytek, shipping Far Cry and managing pre-production for Crysis before coming to Ubisoft Shanghai where he was most recently responsible for projects including Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for the PlayStation 3. Before video games, Tsao gathered a decade of development experience as a technical project manager and programmer for various client/server software projects, including deploying the first online billing system for MSN Internet access service.
Ubisoft was the first major developer to establish itself in China, opening a development studio in Shanghai in 1996. Ubisoft's Shanghai studio, managed by Corinne Leroy, has developed internationally renowned games including Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow for the Xbox, which reached No. 1 shortly after its release in 2004. The studio celebrated its 10th anniversary last year and the team is currently developing an entirely new franchise, Tom Clancy's EndWar, which will release in 2008.

Nintendo Europe is adding a new silver Nintendo DS Lite to the range, joining the black, white and pink versions from 12th October.
Nintendo DS has become Europe's best-selling games console, with over 14 million sold to date and in many markets across Europe it is the fastest selling handheld games console in history. Strong sales are being maintained even in traditionally slow sales periods in the video games industry's seasonality and this is being seen with software as well as hardware.
More Brain Training from Dr. Kawashima: How Old Is Your Brain? will soon hit the 1 million milestone in Europe, with over 915,000 already sold in just 11 weeks since launch. The original Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? has sold over 3.3 million copies and continues to feature high in software sales charts across Europe, despite launching over a year ago. Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl have sold approximately 1.6 million copies combined in just 7 weeks since their launch.
As sales continue to grow at a rapid rate, it is not only traditional gamers who are enjoying the touch screen controls and wide range of software. Whether you wish to exercise your brain, train and communicate with puppies, battle and collect Pokémon or embark on in-depth adventures, the DS has software that is appealing to both avid games and new gamers of all ages. This momentum for Nintendo DS is set to continue with forthcoming new releases, including the highly anticipated Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass which launches on 19th October.
Eve Online for Mac, Linux
Posted by M @ 11:10 a.m. NZST

CCP Games, one of the world's largest independent game developers, has formed a partnership with TransGaming Inc. which will enable CCP to deliver its popular massively multiplayer online game, Eve Online, with Linux and Macintosh platforms later this year.
TransGaming provides technology and expertise to deploy games across a range of platforms without the need for redevelopment and still maintaining the quality of gameplay and allowing users of different platforms to play in the same perpetual online universe. As a result of this partnership, CCP will be able to expand the reach of its sci-fi MMOG to new groups around the world.
As an element of the partnership, Eve Online and TransGaming will share quality assurance as well as technical support responsibilities but TransGaming will lead partnership and OEM opportunities for the Linux version of Eve Online. The two companies will work hand-in-hand to ensure all releases go smoothly, creating a transparent integration of the original Eve Online code with each platform.
TransGaming first introduced Linux users to Eve Online through Cedega, a software product that allows Windows games to run on the Linux operating system completely transparently and seamlessly. It was the popularity of this solution that indicated the strong demand for further integration between CCP Games and TransGaming. Later this year, Eve Online will be released for Linux with Cedega directly integrated into the game and on Mac through TransGaming's Cider portability engine.
"We're pleased to extend our relationship with TransGaming, as the company's expertise allows us to deliver the most innovative MMOG to more platforms," said Halldor Fannar, CTO of CCP Games. "By integrating TransGaming's excellent technology, we are able to keep our laser-focus on evolving Eve Online, while simultaneously expanding the Eve universe to even more players."
"Eve Online has always ranked highly with our Linux users and there is significant demand for it among other platforms, including the rapidly growing Mac base," said Vikas Gupta, CEO of TransGaming Technologies. "As Eve takes place within a single-server persistent universe, it's vital that the game is identical in every way across different platforms. This challenge is what makes the partnership with CCP both important and rewarding."
Eve Online is available for download now at eve-online.com.

"We firmly believe that PlayStation 3 has the capabilities to sit at the heart of the living room and very much belongs there. This award highlights that claim."

We are proud of what this company's management team has accomplished in a short time, and confident that our efforts will build the value of Take-Two in the future."

Wii Zapper with Link's Crossbow Training
Posted by M @ 10:42 p.m. NZST

Nintendo has announced that the Wii Zapper interface for the Wii system will come packed with Link's Crossbow Training. Nintendo says the software is based on the hugely popular Legend of Zelda series and provides a perfect demonstration of the way the Wii Zapper could be used in other games. The Wii Zapper casing houses both the motion-sensitive Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers in a single unit for precision targeting. It goes on sale in North America on November 19th for US$20.
"The Wii Zapper combines our remarkable controllers into one housing with a classic style reminiscent of arcade-style games," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Both veteran and first-time players will find it brings a whole new dimension to games where targeting is key and provides even more exciting game-play experiences."
Link's Crossbow Training drops players into a world in the style of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Players assume the identity of hero Link, who progresses through a series of tests to perfect his crossbow marksmanship. Start with stationary bull's-eyes and graduate to moving targets before defending Link against all kinds of enemies.
Third-party publishers have lined up to support the Wii Zapper. EA's Medal of Honor Heroes 2 lets players take World War II into their hands with the Wii Zapper. The game features an all-new Wii-exclusive Arcade Mode that offers accessibility to gamers of all skill levels, a full single-player campaign and support for up to 32 players in multiplayer. Capcom's Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles reveals the back story behind the fall of the Umbrella Corporation by exploring locations from Resident Evil 0, 1, 2 and 3, as well as new never-before-seen locations like Umbrella's stronghold. One or two players use the Wii Zapper to take aim against a horde of zombies in first-person perspective. Sega's Ghost Squad lets players replicate the arcade light-gun experience at home with the Wii Zapper.

Master Chief first game character at Madame Tussauds
Posted by M @ 2:26 a.m. NZST

Madame Tussauds Las Vegas honoured Xbox 360's Halo by immortalising the Master Chief as the first video game character to be enshrined in the world famous attraction's 250-year history.
The life-sized figure of Halo's Master Chief was revealed to the world by songwriter and bass player Pete Wentz of 2007 Teen Choice Award Winner and Grammy nominated band Fall Out Boy at an official unveiling ceremony at the weekend.
"For me, the launch of Halo 3 will be the entertainment event of the year. It will be as big as or bigger than any of the summer's movie blockbusters," said Wentz. "Master Chief is as much of a hero today as characters like Spiderman, Frodo and Luke Skywalker were for previous generations."
The figure was created at the Madame Tussauds Studios in London specifically for the Las Vegas attraction. Master Chief stands at an impressive 7'2" tall, with an approximate finished weight of 125kg. A total of 10 studio artists worked on the massive figure, dedicating an estimated 892 man-hours for the finalisation of the stoic soldier. Total man-hours included 687 hours for sculpting, 168 hours for molding, and 37 hours for painting. Materials included over 1,000 pounds of clay.
Visitors to Madame Tussauds Las Vegas will have the opportunity to see the massive figure up close and personal before the most anticipated game release of 2007 – Halo 3, scheduled for September 25. Master Chief will be stationed at the attraction's front entrance area – providing guests with a "disarming" greeting at the door. With its towering presence, this newest attraction at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas is sure to bring out the most devoted fan base – Halo Nation, for a personal look and photo with their iconic hero. As is Madame Tussauds standard operating procedure, guests will be able to interact with the figure for photos and a close-up look at the artistic details that bring this digital game world hero to life.
In Halo 3, the third installment of the landmark trilogy, people everywhere can take on the role of Master Chief and experience his greatest battle as he launches an epic mission to stop the Covenant, destroy the impending Flood threat and ultimately save mankind. Master Chief returns to face his greatest challenge as he readies himself for a final battle that's destined to seal his place in history.

Tom Morello playing boss in Legends of Rock
Posted by M @ 7:22 p.m. NZST

Activision has announced that Grammy Award-winning guitarist Tom Morello, from Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave and the Nightwatchman, will guest star as a boss character in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, providing guitar heroes the chance to shred with the music icon. Morello is listed as #26 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.
"Whenever I play Guitar Hero my opponent always kicks my ass on my own riffs. It's embarrassing," said Morello. "Now that I'm actually in the game I hope the digital me will win once in a while."
"We are thrilled to have two guitar icons of our generation on board to be bosses in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock," said Tim Riley, worldwide executive of music. "Both Morello and Slash went into the studio and created mind-blowing original recordings designed to be challenging for even the expert players."
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock boss battles give fans a chance to compete against legendary guitarists such as Slash and now Tom Morello. Players are required to deplete the boss' Rock Meter before the boss goes into his Death Drain solo, which always means 'lights-out.' After defeating a boss, players unlock that guitarist as a playable character and continue to the encore for the set list, which is a master recording of one of their respective bands' most well-known tracks. When Morello is defeated, the next performance is Bulls on Parade, during which Morello performs on stage alongside the player.
Bulls on Parade features one of Morello's most famous guitar riffs and a highly unusual solo that sounds more like a turntable than a guitar by making use of the toggle switch and rubbing a hand along the strings parallel to the neck of the guitar. Now, fans have the chance to emulate some of Morello's extremely innovative guitar playing antics.
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, published by RedOctane and developed by Neversoft, will be available starting October 28.

Dragon's Lair for DS in Q1
Posted by M @ 3:51 p.m. NZST

Conspiracy Entertainment has secured the publishing rights to one of the world's best known gaming franchises, Dragon's Lair.
Conspiracy will be releasing the original Dragon's Lair and Dragon's Lair II: Warp Time for the Nintendo DS. United Coders (formerly Wizardry Engineering) is developing all versions of the games.
Lead Programmer & Executive Producer, Hans Olsen of United Coders, comments: "This is such an important gaming franchise as it falls into one of those conversations - 'Do you remember were where you when Elvis or Diana died?' - except with this game it's 'Do you remember in which chip shop or arcade you first played this game?'
"We talked long and hard with the original creators of Dragon's Lair - Don Bluth, Gary Goldman and Rick Dyer – they were so impressed with our vision for these titles, that we now have these gaming gems to bring to the market in a new format."
Dragon's Lair DS features two modes of play: 1983 Arcade mode and Director's Cut.
The 1983 version plays just like the original arcade game released in 1983. This mode satisfies the hardcore gamer who wishes to re-live the first ever handheld version of Dragon's Lair, that is 100% true to the original and has all scenes and all the quirks and oddities found in that version.
The director's cut is aimed mostly at players who have never experienced the game before, plays somewhat differently "in a very unique way"; and in the director's cut there is also full support for the Rumble Pak, stylus support, and voice recognition.
Dragon's Lair DS is due to ship in the 1st quarter of 2008 with the others to follow at a later date.

More licenses for PES 2008
Posted by M @ 10:43 a.m. NZST

Konami has released further details regarding the eagerly-awaited PES 2008, due for release later in the year for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC-DVD, PlayStation 2, PSP and Nintendo DS.
Following the announcement of Cristiano Ronaldo as the European face of the new game, Konami has also extended the number of officially licensed national and club teams in the game. PES 2008 will boast more licenses than ever before, with Brazil, Portugal, Greece, Scotland and Ireland amongst the new officially licensed national teams on offer.
Similarly, the roster of licensed club teams has also been bolstered, with Newcastle, Tottenham, RSC Anderlecht, HJK Helsinki, IFK Goteborg, Panathinaicos, Spartak Moscow, Fenerbache, NK Dinamo Zagreb and FC Basel amongst those added to the ranks.
The new licensed club sides join the likes of Juventus Turin, AC Milan, Celtic, Porto and more, adding the world's greatest teams to what is regarded as the most realistic football game for any system. The new teams also combine to ensure PES 2008 has over 3000 licensed players realistically replicated within the game, and over 250 teams.
Konami says PES 2008 will mark a quantum leap forward for the Pro Evolution Soccer series. An all-new AI system entitled Teamvision has been designed to actively monitor the player's onscreen movements and adapt accordingly. This means players cannot resort to overly-familiar tactics, and forces them to change their movements if they are to pose offensive threats. New set pieces have also been implemented, with players selecting key players to receive free kicks, and tailoring defensive walls to their specific needs. Coupled with a "massively enhanced" aesthetic upgrade that includes facial animation and shirts creasing, plus an extensive edit mode, PES 2008 is shaping up to retain its footballing crown.
PES 2008 will be released in October.

Sidhe's Speed Racer releasing with Wachowski film
Posted by M @ 12:15 a.m. NZST

Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment will launch Kiwi-made Speed Racer, based on the upcoming film written and directed by the Wachowski brothers.
The game will be available in 2008 on the Wii and Nintendo DS systems as the Speed Racer film hits cinemas. It will be released on the PlayStation 2 with the DVD launch.
In the Wii and PlayStation 2 system games, developed by Wellington's Sidhe Interactive and published by Warner Bros., players will be able to take on the role of the characters from the film, getting behind the wheels of each character's signature vehicles to experience firsthand the film's high adrenaline, combative racing style.
The car-fu style of action within the game will "closely represent" the action style being designed by the Wachowski brothers for the film itself as they lend direction and assets to the development team directly from their Berlin set. John Gaeta, a long time Wachowski collaborator and Co-VFX Supervisor on the Speed Racer film, is working with Sidhe and WBIE to assist in maintaining a close film-to-game aesthetic connection.
"Speed Racer is an exceptionally creative property and teamed with the Wachowski brothers' vision it makes for action-packed racing gameplay," said Samantha Ryan, senior vice president, development and production, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "The game will capture the intensity of the racing in the film to give gamers and movie fans a chance to take the wheel after the experience the film."
"We are very excited about this natural extension from the Speed Racer film to the videogame. Larry and Andy are videogame fans themselves, so they believe that an interactive game is a key component to the entire Speed Racer experience," said film producer Joel Silver.
Developing across console, handheld, and PC, Sidhe has created a range of products including a variety of racing titles.
Written and directed by the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix trilogy, V for Vendetta) and produced by Joel Silver, Speed Racer is based on the classic series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida. A live-action family adventure, Speed Racer follows the young race-car driver Speed in his quest for glory on and off the track in his thundering Mach 5.
The film will feature other characters that fans of the show will remember, including Speed's family and his mysterious arch-rival, Racer X. The new high-octane actioner will combine the kind of revolutionary visual effects and cutting-edge storytelling that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowski brothers' films, bringing Speed Racer into the 21st century. The film stars Emile Hirsch ("Alpha Dog") as Speed, Christina Ricci ("Black Snake Moan") as Trixie and Matthew Fox (TV's "Lost") as Racer X as well as Oscar winner Susan Sarandon ("Dead Man Walking") and John Goodman ("Evan Almighty") as Mom and Pops Racer.

Gears of War pack free on Live tonight
Posted by M @ 1:00 a.m. NZST

From 10pm today, the Hidden Fronts Map Pack will join the Annex gametype and Multiplayer Map Pack 1 as another piece of free downloadable content for Gears of War.
Gears of War has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide, and recorded the most number of unique players among all Xbox 360 games in August 2007, as well as the highest cumulative number of hours played by Xbox Live members.
In the Hidden Fronts Map Pack, players can clash for control of four dynamic areas, Bullet Marsh, Garden, Process, and Subway:
Bullet Marsh In this Kryll-infested swamp, an old generator still powers the area lights. A few stray bullets could easily knock out the generator, leaving combatants to fend for themselves against the Kryll.
Garden This overgrown and crumbling conservatory still has a working fertilisation and pesticide system. This system can pose a serious hazard to anyone who ventures into the greenhouse without first venting the air.
Process Fight for control of this subterranean imulsion processing plant, still active despite the cessation of the Pendulum wars.
Subway Timgad's central subway station used to serve as a hub for commuters. Now the tunnels are crawling with Locust.
The action of Gears of War continues this November with the release of Gears of War for Windows Vista and Windows XP and adds a variety of all-new content, including three new multiplayer maps, a new multiplayer game type, game editor, five new campaign chapters and DirectX 10 support.
