Next Total War Game Delayed Again
Posted by Big Gaz @ 8:12 a.m. NZST

Activision have revealed that Rome: Total War has been pushed back until Q2 2004. This is the third delay for the title after originally being due out before Christmas and then being pushed back until January a couple of months ago. Hopefully the new engine is a big improvement over the one used in Medieval: Total War otherwise by the time it releases it may be looking quite dated.
"Rome: Total War is the next generation in epic strategy gaming from the critically acclaimed and award winning Total War brand. The aim of the game is to conquer, rule and manipulate the Roman Empire with the ultimate goal of being declared as the "Imperator" of Rome. Set in a time when the mighty Roman Empire emerged to conquer the known world against powerful enemies, when gladiators fought to a bloody death in the Coliseum; when Spartacus defied the might of the empire; when Hannibal led his invincible army and his war elephants across the Alps to strike fear into the very heart of Rome itself; and when Julius Caesar finally smashed the Barbarian Gauls. This was a time of brutal confrontation between civilisation and barbarism, and of civil war as the ancient world's only superpower turned on itself."

Players assume the role of Logan; a veteran mercenary turned bounty hunter who is out to make it rich. Using a system of implants, the player is able to manipulate Logan's personality and abilities in order to accomplish all of the 14 enormous and varied missions. During the course of the missions, Logan takes part in breathtaking chases using six futuristic vehicles, becomes a silent assassin to strike at unwitting enemies, or grabs his heavy plasma gun and implants enhanced muscles to storm through enemy lines. And if all this isn't enough, Logan's past starts to catch up with him at the most inappropriate of moments..."
Chrome is currently under development by Techland and will be published by Take 2 Interactive in New Zealand and Australia.

KOTOR Lives Up To Expectations
Posted by Big Gaz @ 8:00 a.m. NZST

The first reviews for the long awaited StarWars: Knights of the Old Republic on the Xbox have come out in the U.S. We're glad to say that they are all overwhelmingly positive! The first RPG to feature the StarWars license seems to have delivered where so many mediocre StarWars games (and a couple of pretty average films) could not over recent years. That is storyline, atmosphere and (in case of the games) great gameplay. A big thumbs up to Lucasarts for giving the project to Bioware - the creator's of Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights were the right people for the job.
The latest word from the local distributors is that Knights of the Old Republic will be releasing in New Zealand on September 4th. Make a note people - it is the next 'must have' Xbox title.

We've received word that The Great Escape from Pivotal Games is on track to release in New Zealand on August 29th. The game will be releasing at the same time for the Xbox, Playstation 2 and PC.
"The Great Escape video game is based on the 1963 Oscar nominated film staring Steve McQueen and revolves around actual events during WW2. The game is set in a number of unique locations, from POW camps to a mountain-top castle. Game levels include a busy hospital, a chase through a moving train and escape from an active Luftwaffe airfield. The core of the game centres on the largest mass breakout ever, from the 'escape proof' Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp. The game uses the powerful storyline and strong characters from the film to place the player in the heart of the action, as the POW's resist the German war machine. It uses a combination of stealth, combat and frantic action involving multiple vehicles and an awesome motorbike based finale."

Rendered cut scenes punctuate the action and help the story to develop.
The survival-mode can be played by either one or two players. One game that we can't wait to get our hands on is the upcoming Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader, the latest RPG from the legends over at Black Isle Studios. We recently saw some new footage of the game in action, and it is looking superb. Needless to say that Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale fans should be drooling in anticipation right now. The good news is that we don't have too much longer to wait, as according to the local distributors Lionheart is on track to be released in New Zealand around August 26th. We'll keep you posted.
"In the year 1192, Richard the Lionhearted, King of England, ventured across Europe during the Third Crusade. At the height of this aggression the lines that define our reality blurred, allowing a short but devastating influx of magic and spiritkind to be unleashed across the Earth. Occurring some 400 years after this cataclysm, Lionheart diverges from traditional high fantasy by placing the player in 16th century Europe where the Renaissance has halted, casting a shadow over civilization by keeping mankind in an enduring Dark Age. To some who could comprehend the nature of these new forces, the introduction of magic has brought great power. To the common folk, magic is feared as the handiwork of evil. In this new, yet hauntingly familiar setting, the player must decide how to best develop their character's skills and abilities to triumph over obstacles in order to discover the meaning of their true fate."

Monday Rant
Posted by phantom @ 10:20 a.m. NZST

Was it cold or what? Geez, two days locked inside with the kids gave me cabin fever! Good chance to do some serious gaming though. Played through the 'Play the World' campaign of "Rise of Nations'. What a great game.
My wife got one the coolest computer accessories you can buy in the weekend. It's a heating plate you put under your desk and put your feet on to get warm. Man this thing puts out some heat. Only problem is that she only bought the one. Don't know what she complains about she's got slippers!
Sport was not much chop either. Just when you think it's safe to sit down and watch the Warriors they pull another defeat out of the bag. Cowboys played well although this was helped by the Warriors lack luster effort
Is it me or are cartoons wasted on kids. Ever watched 'Spongebob Squarepants'? Man that show has some real adult humour that goes over the head of most children. Only draw back is that it has a real annoying theme tune that you can't get out of your head...

Colin McRae 4 This September
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:55 a.m. NZST

Codemasters have sent through more details on Colin McRae 4 for the Xbox and Playstation 2. The main piece of info is the news that the game is now due out in September - a couple of months earlier than expected. Fans of the series will also be interested to hear that the handling mechanics have been upgraded. Previously the car handling employed a steering aid, which had the effect of making the car move around a central pivot point. Now the aid's been removed, effectively taking the stabilisers off, providing for a more professional, realistic and natural handling experience.
Gary Dunn, Codemasters' Director of Development says about the change "It's all in the detail; the team has enhanced the already-powerful physics engine to make each car handle even more realistically and instinctively. Cars are modelled heavier and have more attributes added to the engine. From Colin McRae Rally 3, we've also increased the number of terrain surface types from 20 to 34, and tyre types from 10 to 19, to ensure the handling on different surfaces and weather conditions is more accurate than ever before."
Video footage of Colin McRae 4 in action is available now in our movies section.

"The Great Escape video game is based on the 1963 Oscar nominated film staring Steve McQueen and revolves around actual events during WW2. Game levels include a busy hospital, a chase through a moving train and escape from an active Luftwaffe airfield. The core of the game centres on the largest mass breakout ever, from the 'escape proof' Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp. It uses a combination of stealth, combat and frantic action involving multiple vehicles and an awesome motorbike based finale."

According to reports they have plans to start a new games development company, and will release more details soon. The Blizzard North team were the ones behind both Diablo games and the Diablo II expansion pack.
The news is a big blow for Vivendi who have been trying to sell off their game unit (which includes Blizzard) for quite a while. Blizzard is without doubt the crown jewel in the unit, and the Diablo franchise (and the people behind it) was the crown jewel for Blizzard.

Tuesday Rant
Posted by Big Gaz @ 9:04 a.m. NZST

Did anyone see Fear Factor last night? You see the size of those cow eyeballs? ewwwwww. It was not a good time to be cooking dinner. And the guy who won the money only to lose half of it on one hand of Blackjack... ouch (he got on the wrong episode that's for sure).
-----
The first reviews for Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne hit the net late last night and the news is all good as both Gamespy and ActionTrip have given it the big thumbs up. Can't wait to get back into some Warcraft action next week. Speaking of reviews, the first ones for StarWars Galaxies are also out and they are a bit mixed. I'd have to say though that posting a review for a MMORPG only a week or so after general release (in the U.S.) is a bit iffy...
-----
Got the latest issue of Edge magazine yesterday. For those of you who still can't help but buy gaming magazines (like me) then this is the one to get. Not many book/magazine shops stock it in NZ but your local gamestore might. A special E3 DVD comes with the new issue so don't miss it (email cam@gpstore.co.nz - he may have a couple left).
-----
After much feedback and discussion the rant will be moving to the features section from tomorrow! It will also now only be on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Thankyou everyone for your great feedback and support!
