Xbox Outsells Gamecube In Japan
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:59 a.m. NZST

Well, for a week anyway :). Figures have been released with the latest consoles sales figures from Japan for the week ending May 26th.

  • PlayStation 2: 65,200 (Annual: 1,705,300)
  • Game Boy Advance: 30,900 (Annual: 1,187,700)
  • Xbox: 7,400 (Annual: 193,000)
  • PSOne: 4,800 (Annual: 114,800)
  • GameCube: 2,500 (Annual: 563,200)
  • The Xbox price drop seems to have had a very positive effect, as it's the first time since the Xbox has launched that it has outsold the Gamecube. We may even see the Xbox here one day...stranger things have happened.

Of more interesting note (being closer to home) are the latest Australian console sales figures for the same period.

  • PlayStation 2: 5,823 (Life sales to date 343,646)
  • Xbox: 3,657 (Life sales to date 48, 477)
  • GameCube: 3,810 (Life sales to date 14, 053)
  • Xbox sales figures are surprisingly high, but again can be put down to the price drop. Gamecube has abit of ground to make up, the thing that will hold it back being lack of stock. Meanwhile, Sony's factories still struggle to keep up with demand.

    Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
    Posted by @ 7:55 a.m. NZST

A game that wasn't shown at E3, but only talked about for a few minutes was Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life for the Gamecube. Developer Natsume did manage to drop a few important details for fans though. A Wonderful Life will contain elements of all the past Harvest Moons all wrapped into one. Staying true to the series' tradition, it will of course feature completely non-linear gameplay, letting gamers create a unique life of their own. It's just you, a farm, and the rest of your life.

The game is told to feature:

  • Harvest Moon at its best, live life how you want to and enjoy a completely non-linear gameplay experience
  • Get married and raise a family
  • Farm your crops and create all-new hybrid vegetables
  • Brand new farmyard animals to raise
  • A Wonderful Life draws on the best qualities of the series and promises to add more
  • With luck the game will see a PAL release.

    The Thing Website Opens
Posted by Big Gaz @ 8:16 a.m. NZST

Universal Interactive have opened the official website for their upcoming horror adventure game, The Thing. Go and check it out.

After the enigmatic deaths of an American scientific expedition in the uncharted and frozen wastelands of the Antarctic, a military rescue team is sent to investigate their deaths. Within these inhospitable surroundings the team encounters a strange shape-shifting alien life-form that assumes the appearance of people that it kills.

The game brings fear and suspense to unimaginable levels, with a compelling plot and unique gameplay elements based upon action, evasion, trust and fear. Forget everything you ever learned about obliterating alien species simply with a barrage of violent ammunition - this monster is difficult to see, hard to kill, and seemingly impossible to evade.

And when you actually see it, it is often too late…

CDV have opened the official website for their upcoming Action RPG, Project Nomads. Check it out.

PROJECT NOMADS is a cross genre game that mixes gameplay elements of 3D action, real-time strategy and role-playing. Huge, floating islands drift slowly through the haze of the clouds. Amidst these rocky giants, the player controls a flying Wizard Engineer. With his arcane powers and glittering, magical artefacts, he can build clusters of factories, power plants and defence facilities on these massive platforms.

Armies of flying machines, biplanes and zeppelins produced by the factories are controlled to gain the upper hand in the battle for rare resources and valuable artefacts. The floating platform is used like a battleship to explore the unknown realms in the clouds.

    Gore Goes Gold
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:57 a.m. NZST

Dreamcatcher have announced that GORE, their FPS for the PC, has gone gold. The game is due for release here the end of June. Be sure to check out the official website.

"Gore is an online multi-player FPS game with an offline ladder system challenging the player against an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI). There is also an offline, single-player mode for players without an Internet connection, or who want to practice offline. 4D Rulers, the games developer, has implemented many new things which will have a profound impact on traditional deathmatch play, as well as other new and popular gaming styles. The addition of a Stamina model, where players will find it harder to move and jump as their stamina decreases, adds a fun new tactical element to the traditional FPS. Other gameplay features have all been implemented in new ways that will change the way you play! In Gore, armor must be shot off before the player takes damage, unique character models not only look but play differently and the environment is fully interactive."

    Reign Of Fire Details
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:50 a.m. NZST

BAM! Entertainment have released details of their upcoming action game Reign of Fire Dragons. Based on the upcoming multi-million dollar Spyglass Entertainment movie, Reign of Fire is a sizzling, fast-paced game that's currently in development at Kuju Entertainment's London based studio.

"Reign of Fire will throw gamers into ferocious battles between two ancient species fighting for survival: humans and dragons. An action-packed third-person arcade adventure set in the near future, players will choose to take the side of either the humans - struggling to fight back against their seemingly insurmountable foes - or the dragons themselves: an awesome army of fire-breathing beasts intent on incinerating everything in their path.

The game is split into two sections: the human and dragon stories. In the highly destructive dragon missions, players will assume the role of just one of the winged beasts taking over the world. This player dragon looks astoundingly life-like and utilises a skinned animation system to create organic looking and fluid movement. The beast will realistically bank, back pedal, climb, hover, and dive across the post-apocalyptic looking landscape. With the final model being built with approximately 60 bones, the animators on the project have developed a frighteningly authentic looking dragon.

This player dragon will continue to evolve throughout the course of the game, beginning as a young inexperienced animal with only the most basic of destructive abilities: the Fireball - its main destructive weapon, Napalm Breath - used to spray close-range damage and to set fire to crops, livestock and enemies, and finally the ability to pick up objects (then drop them on your enemies). All of these abilities improve as the dragon ages and the player progresses through the game: for example when the player first picks up objects they may only be able to manage small items, such as livestock or humans, but by the end of the game they will be throwing jeeps and APC's!"

Reign of Fire will be available on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Game Cube and Game Boy Advance in October 2002. Check out www.bam4fun.com for more details.

The delay has been put down to a delay in shipping. Electronic Arts have also said that their T.V campaign for MOH kicks off on June 9th.

Patterson on 15 crucial assignments ranging from destroying a German Naval base, rescuing a captured OSS operative from a Nazi held Dutch manor house, stowing away above and aboard a speeding Nazi armored train, to disarming the undercarriage of Nijmegen Bridge, made famous in the film A Bridge Too Far.

Players will take on five missions, each consisting of at least three individual levels, all of which add up to one complete storyline. To help him succeed in his assignment, Lt. Patterson will have the assistance of a small squad of soldiers and a slew of new weapons, ranging from the Liberator Pistol, Panzerschreck, MG42 mounted machine gun—to the return of the ever-popular B.A.R. Patterson's friends and foes will all have much improved AIs, making for tense and heated large-scale battles, with friends, foes, and even civilians all on screen at any given moment."

Grand Theft Auto 3 Sequel Announced
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:53 a.m. NZST

Rockstar and Take 2 have announced the official follow-up to Grand Theft Auto 3, to be called Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The game will (at this stage) be an exclusive for the Playstation 2, and will be released in the U.S this October.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will surpass the unprecedented gameplay, cinematic graphics and immersive audio experience that gamers associate with Grand Theft Auto 3, which was released in October 2001 and has rapidly become the fastest selling, highest grossing game for PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system to-date, with global sales exceeding 6 million units. Rockstar Games will release additional information about the game's content in July, but the following details are clear: It's an entirely new game set in the '80s, the location is Vice City, and the vibe is glamour, power and corruption...

Sam Houser, the executive producer of the Grand Theft Auto franchise and president of Rockstar Games, commented, "The success of Grand Theft Auto 3 has made us very proud, but it has also motivated us enormously. The work currently being done by our development and production teams in Edinburgh and New York is going to surpass the efforts of last year, as we set our sights on making an even more revolutionary gaming experience. This will be reflected in the size of the game, the scope of the gameplay, the extent of the gameplayer's freedom, the quality of production value and the all-important sense of style."

Les Benzies, the producer of Grand Theft Auto games, noted, "Although it may appear to be a challenge to develop a game superior to Grand Theft Auto 3, our progress to date on Vice City makes me highly confident that we can deliver a truly innovative game."

Kelly Sumner, Take-Two Interactive Software's Chief Executive Officer added, "Grand Theft Auto 3 has become the "must-have" title for PlayStation 2 and is appropriately regarded as a landmark in interactive entertainment. We are delighted with the plans for Vice City, and are totally committed to supporting Rockstar's creative efforts and investing in the development and marketing approach that made Grand Theft Auto 3 such a tremendous success."

EA Announce Freedom: Battle For Liberty Island
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:04 a.m. NZST

In a move to make sure it doesn't get lost among the plethora of new game announcements that always come with E3, Electronic Arts have announced a new title a few days early. Freedom: The Battle for Liberty Island is third-person action-adventure game set in the grim reality of an alternate history. The game is being developed for Playstation 2, Xbox and PC and will be released the end of the year.

"In a new reality where the Soviet Union won the Cold War, a fierce conflict is unfolding in America as the Red Army invades a vulnerable United States. The player takes on the role of an average citizen caught in the middle of the conflict as forces take control New York City and begin imprisoning innocent Americans, including the player's brother. With American military forces pushed out of New York City, an Underground Resistance movement in Manhattan is all that remains to retake control of the fallen city. Recruited by the Resistance, the player will rise through the ranks by successfully completing missions with minimal casualties, ultimately becoming the charismatic leader of the group. Success will largely depend on the player's ability to recruit and lead fellow New Yorkers to join in the battle, and eventually rescue his sibling and liberate the city.

Freedom: The Battle for Liberty Island provides two layers of gameplay -- a strategic turn-based mode centering around base operations in the underground sewer and an action mode that unfolds in the streets where fierce battles are won or lost and resources are captured. In this mode players will experience intense urban guerilla warfare scenarios ranging from small sabotage missions to large battles where players have to conquer enemy installations."

For the first time ever, show attendees will have the chance to adventure through this epic world and experience the game's deep, immersive gameplay.

"In setting out to create a massively multiplayer universe, we wanted to give people the opportunity to help redefine a place they remember fondly," stated Mike Morhaime, Blizzard Entertainment president and co-founder.

"The hands-on E3 presentation will show off the world of Azeroth in great detail and feature notable advancements to the dynamic Warcraft universe including two new uncharted regions -- the Deadmines and the Monastery. These diverse new environments will give gamers the ability to quest through mystifying lands filled with countless adventures. Feats of legendary heroism will ensue as the journey continues and players find themselves engaged in action-packed combat.

Additionally, three of the game's many character classes --Warriors, Mages and Shamans -- will be seen for the first time at the show. These new classes will give players the opportunity to customize their experience and use their imagination to create the ultimate, mighty character.

World of Warcraft's fourth race, the Dwarves, will also be revealed at the show. These proud warriors serve as excellent craftsmen and are considered by many to be the hardiest of all the races. They are an ancient race, strong, stocky and well suited for plumbing the depths of the world in search of hordes of treasure."

I'm sure Thomas and Matt will report back to us with all the great details :). Hopefully they had a good rest on the plane last night, they are going to need it!

    Xbox Slashed In The U.S
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:52 a.m. NZST

Hot on the heels of Sonys new $199.95 price for the Playstation 2 in North America, Microsoft have followed suit. Effective immediately, the Xbox is now $199US. I guess no one is surprised, but we had to tell you :).

"As part of our long-term strategy to broaden the reach of Xbox and make it accessible to more consumers, we've been working for several weeks with our key partners to make this announcement as seamless and high impact as possible," said John O'Rourke, director of worldwide Xbox marketing at Microsoft.

With its cutting-edge technology, advanced graphics engine, hard disk drive and built-in Ethernet port, Xbox has been globally acknowledged as the most powerful video game console in the world. And with a rapidly expanding games portfolio featuring such titles as Game of the Year Halo , Xbox has become the system of choice for millions of enthusiasts around the globe. "This new, lower price makes Xbox the best value among all competing video game systems," O'Rourke said. "The best box is now the best value."

O'Rourke acknowledged that speculation surrounding a pending price reduction of Xbox has been pervasive in the last few weeks. "The traditional forum for making an announcement of this magnitude is the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) next week, but we've been ready to go for some time and can easily put this in place at retail now. We see no reason why eager gamers should have to wait a week to benefit from this tremendous value opportunity."

True Crime: Streets Of L.A Announced
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:47 a.m. NZST

Activision have announced a new game called True Crime: Streets of L.A for all next generation consoles.

"Inspired by Hong Kong action films, the game lets players assume the role of tough-as-nails detective Nick Kang, bent on settling a personal vendetta with the L.A. underworld. As Kang, players will be able to dispense their own personal brand of justice through automotive combat, a variety of rib cracking martial arts moves and the business end of dual 45s. True Crime: Streets Of L.A. has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

"Mission-based driving and action adventure collide in this bold new direction for interactive entertainment," states Larry Goldberg, executive vice president, Activision Worldwide Studios. "Infused with the unique flair of Hong Kong action films, True Crime: Streets of L.A. allows players to experience first-hand the car stunts, close calls, quick wit and high-action that are synonymous with this distinct style of cinema."

Developed by Luxoflux, the creators of the successful Vigilante 8 series, the game blends multiple genres into a single cinematic action game. Car chases, shootouts, foot pursuits and hand-to-hand combat are all in a day's work when it comes to taking down the mob. More than 20 branching missions and 100 sub-missions lead gamers down dozens of possible paths and outcomes. Busting a robbery could tip players off to a future crime, or a foul-up could just as easily get an informant killed. As players cruise the mean streets, random missions can also pop-up on the car radio adding even more gameplay to the immense adventure.

Featuring a powerful 3D engine, True Crime: Streets Of L.A. allows players to move freely through a 400 square mile living, breathing re-creation of the City of Angels. Players will be able to visit popular L.A. landmarks, or buy services from local gun merchants, mechanics or doughnut shops and improve Kang's abilities by visiting auto simulators, dojo's and gun ranges around town. True Crime: Streets Of L.A. is slated to ship in 2003."

Final Fantasy X To Be 50Hz
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:30 a.m. NZST

Square have recently announced that the soon to be released PAL version of Final Fantasy X (due here the end of this month) will not include a 60Hz mode. Here's the statement from Square.

"In preparation for the European release of FFX, we have carefully examined the technical factors involved with the PAL conversion. After a thorough analysis of both the 50/60Hz switch and full screen display support, our development team has come to the conclusion that these features cannot be implemented due to the lack of free space for image data on the DVD to support the 50/60Hz switch.

In order to do a 60hz switch, it would have been necessary for the development team to store all of the FMV files on the DVD disc twice (in both 50hz and 60hz modes) and there was simply not enough space on the disc to achieve this.

The PAL version of Final Fantasy X makes full use of the potential of the hardware and fully supports voice-overs and other technically advanced features. Furthermore, the PAL version of Final Fantasy X is based upon the International version of the game, which was released in Japan in January 2002, and will come packaged with an exclusive bonus DVD that was specially produced for the PAL market. Squaresoft is hopeful that consumers in all PAL territories will enjoy this version of Final Fantasy X."

Oh well. Make sure you check out the special pre-order promotion that Gamezone Online is running for FFX.

    New Hasbro Budget Titles Available
Posted by Big Gaz @ 8:03 a.m. NZST

Hasbro have recently launched 3 new titles on their "Heroes" PC Budget range in New Zealand. You can now pick up Squad Leader, Gunship! and B17 Flying Fortress for only $24.95ea.

Squad Leader: Squad Leader is a World War II, squad-level tactical experience that draws players into the world of fighting men, heroes all in their own way, thrown into horrific battles destined to change the maps of an entire continent. These men pitted their skills, faith and leadership in a struggle for survival and victory. The successful Squad Leader minds his troops closely, staying in tune with the emotions, fatigue and skills of individual soldiers. Each soldier has a history that has been carefully developed to deliver the emotional strain and drama of the epic campaigns fought throughout the War. The complete experience is historically accurate, but history can change based on the skills of the player.

Gunship!: Russia Nationalism is back with a vengeance. From the ashes of economic despair into the heart of the former Soviet territories faster than a heat-seeking missile. Eastern Europe? Nothing less than the flashpoint for WWIII. Russian forces amassed on one side. NATO on the other. You? You're about to deploy the most devastating weapon in the inventory of war: the helicopter gunship. Finesse, raw power, stealth and speed blended in a high-wire balancing act of exact proportions. In 21st Century War, the fate of the world can turn on one micro-engagement in the epicenter of the action. So fly low. And strike deep.

B-17 Flying Fortress: B17 The Mighty Eighth is a simulation of the B17 Flying Fortress Bomber, in which each of the 10 crew members roles must be mastered. Command the supreme daylight bomber of World War II, navigate accurately across Europe, locate and bomb strategic targets and defend the plane from furious enemy attacks. Alternatively, players can take the role of escort fighter pilots or Luftwaffe interceptors. The design and some team members originate from MicroProse's B17 Flying Fortress (1992).

      Indiana Jones Is Back!
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:36 a.m. NZST

Lucasarts have released information on the latest Indiana Jones game which will be coming to the Playstation 2, Xbox and PC later this year, titled Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb.

"Indy's latest adventure plays out in dramatic fashion thanks to new gameplay features such as brawling combat. This time, in addition to using his trademark whip and pistol, Indy can engage in fierce hand-to-hand combat against foes, many of whom are well-versed in martial arts. Improvised weapons such as shovels, chairs and table legs also can be used to fend off adversaries. The result is a more immersive and more Indy-like gameplay experience, set amidst spine-tingling movie-like action sequences, such as a rickshaw chase in Hong Kong and a spectacular battle atop moving gondolas in the South China Sea area.

Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb features The Collective's proprietary 3D engine that supports completely immersive, highly interactive environments. The game will offer 10 levels, all set in unique locales such as a 15th century castle that looms over Prague, an underwater palace in Istanbul, and a mountaintop fortress in China. A sophisticated camera tracking system makes sure that the player always has an optimal view of the third-person action.

"Indiana Jones is back in a bold new way that players have never seen him," says Tom Byron, director of product marketing for LucasArts. "Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb faithfully recreates all the heroism, action and edge-of-the-seat adventure of the blockbuster film series thanks to a state-of-the-art game engine, a rich story, and compelling gameplay."

Indy's whirlwind adventure, set in the Far East in 1935, plunges him into an international crisis of terrifying magnitude. As the game begins, a powerful underground Asian society, the Black Dragon Triad, and a German mercenary, Albrecht Von Beck, have formed an unholy alliance in the hopes of acquiring the Heart of the Dragon, a black pearl that gives its possessor the power to mold minds. Rumored to be buried in the crypt of China's first emperor, it has been safely hidden for more than two thousand years. Now, with this unwelcome coalition in desperate pursuit of one of the most powerful artifacts known to man, it's up to Indy to prevent the Heart of the Dragon from falling into the wrong hands.

      Latest Bond Game Details
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:24 a.m. NZST

Electronic Arts have released new details on their upcoming James Bond game, James Bond 007: NightFire. James Bond 007: NightFire will take Bond fans higher and deeper than any previous Bond game with breathtaking locations and intense gameplay on multiple platforms. NightFire is currently under development and scheduled for worldwide release in late 2002 for PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Xbox video game system from Microsoft and PC platforms.

"NightFire will feature an original single player storyline -- written exclusively for the game and borrowing from the rich 007-legacy that spans 40 years. As Bond, players will operate in the snow capped Austrian Alps and the far reaches of outer space as well as underwater in the depths of the South Pacific to defeat the evil criminal mastermind Rafael Drake, the popular head of a supposedly benign environmental organization who secretly is bent on world domination.

NightFire will offer a deep and rich gameplay experience that epitomizes the Bond universe. The game is primarily seen through a fast-paced, first person perspective. The camera will switch to a dynamic third person perspective for particular interactive game mechanics or to show off heroic Bond moments. NightFire will feature a large variety of missions filled with furious action and stealth, gorgeous women, exotic locales, and sophisticated spy-craft gadgetry that Bond fans expect. The console versions will offer action packed driving experiences with a host of exotic vehicles to bring the best Bond-like stunts to life.

NightFire features more than 10 exotic locations from around the globe and outer space. Each of the mission levels will offer enormous, highly detailed 3D environments that can only be experienced through the eyes of Bond. Level designs challenge players to determine when to blast their way through using high tech weaponry, keenly employ spy-craft tricks and upgradeable gadgets, or stealthily maneuver their way as they accomplish mission objectives and strive for the maximum agent ratings. NightFire will also offer an all-star cast of villains and allies, both new and familiar to the Bond universe.

Each of the platforms will offer unique features catering to that platform's audience. For example, the console versions will feature exclusive driving levels -- developed by the award winning team behind the Need For Speed racing games -- that feature an array of 007-inspired exotic vehicles, including the Aston Martin Vanquish(TM), equipped with weapons and gadgets. The PC game will offer exclusive single player levels for extended excitement and robust multi-player support."

      Nintendo's Endless Advertising.
      Posted by @ 7:12 a.m. NZST

Although Nintendo's advertising for the Gamecube hasn't got into full swing in New Zealand yet, other countries are waiting for the insanity to stop. From floating cubes and Pikmin flowers in America and Japan to big entertainment shows in the UK with entertainers doing their thing inside big glass cubes. What's next?

Nintendo have now taken their advertising to the catwalk with models being painted with Nintendo characters. Models in Milan were painted with designs of Donkey Kong, Mario, Star Wars, Pikmin and Wave Race using a new type of paint, Latex Art. This is applied to the body and after thrity minutes dries to form a fabric-like layer.

      See pictures here.

      Xbox Sales Surge In Europe
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:08 a.m. NZST

Microsoft have reported a sizeable increase in Xbox sales across Europe following its recent price drop.

"Since the European price reduction took effect April 26, weekly sales are running neck-and-neck with PlayStation 2. Based on week-to-week sales since launch, Xbox represents 49% of the next generation console market in the United Kingdom, 46% in France and 55% in Germany. Already-strong attachment rates for Xbox games have increased as well with an average of 3.7 games purchased for each Xbox video game system in the United Kingdom. Award-winning Microsoft Game Studios title "Halo" (recently awarded Game of the Year, Technical Achievement of the Year and Audio Achievement of the Year by influential industry magazine Edge) built on its success, with an average attach rate of 88%. Increased European sales have taken "Halo" well past the one million sales milestone worldwide."

"Our customers have reacted positively to the price drop and we have seen an uplift in sales since April 26," said Alex Croft, head of buying for GAME Stores Group Ltd. "This activity reaffirms Microsoft's commitment to the market and highlights the excellent value Xbox now represents to our customers."

"As we've said before, this is a marathon, not a sprint — and these initial figures are extremely encouraging," said said Sandy Duncan, vice president, Xbox Europe. "But it is delivering great games and great experiences to hundreds of thousands of happy consumers in Europe over the long term that is our most important goal, and we will continue to drive initiatives to continue this cycle of success."

Dungeon Siege Patch And Siege Tools
      Posted by gimpsLTD @ 7:02 a.m. NZST

An update to the official Dungeon Siege website brings word that a beta of the version 1.1 patch will be available on Friday the 10th of May US (Saturday the 11th New Zealand time). The beta patch will be labelled version 1.09b.

"Before we release the final v1.1 update, we are releasing the current candidate publicly in a "beta" form, v1.09B. We think getting this beta out for initial testing early will go a long way to making the v1.1 update a solid one. Although releasing a beta will delay the final update, we feel that the increased stability and polish on the update is worth the delay."

But perhaps the biggest news in the update is the announcement that on the same day as the release of the beta patch, Gas Powered Games will release the HIGHLY anticipated Dungeon Siege Tool Kit (DSTK).

"The other project that is drawing close to release is the Dungeon Siege Tool Kit. Currently, the DSTK consists of several components: the Siege Editor, Siege University, and a variety of supporting tools and documentation. We are planning on releasing the first version of the Siege Editor, as well as "Siege U 100" (the first set of tutorials for SE), on this Friday, May 10th, as well."

This now sets the scene for a slew of siegelets (Dungeon Siege mods) to hit the community, many of which are expected to be of epic proportions.

      Lucasarts Announce New Game
Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:51 a.m. NZST

Lucasarts have announced their latest game, an action adventure title called RTX Redrock. It stars the latest hero for the next generation, E.Z Wheeler. RTX Red Rock is an epic third-person action-adventure expected to release spring 2003 on PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube.

"RTX Red Rock follows in the tradition of classic award-winning original games from LucasArts such as Grim Fandango, The Dig, and Full Throttle," says Tom Byron, director of product marketing for LucasArts. "We know players will quickly welcome E.Z. Wheeler into the LucasArts family of heroes, as this game perfectly blends them with a rich, compelling story and gripping game play."

Action in RTX Red Rock is distinguished by Wheeler's unique mechanized abilities, granted to him through a series of medical operations to mend previous combat injuries. Wheeler's synthetic right arm is both tool and weapon, upgradeable to grappling hook, taser, grenade launcher, and more. Likewise, his synthetic left eye is sensitive to special wavelengths and can be used to locate and target hidden aliens, identify traps, and uncover power-ups throughout the game's 10 levels. State-of-the-art computer techniques allow LucasArts to blend realism and fantasy, bringing players to the planet Mars in a way never before possible. Joining Wheeler in this treacherous adventure is his faithful digital sidekick IRIS (Independent Removable Information System). IRIS is a portable computer module with an impudent female personality. When inserted into standard ports on various robots and control panels she comes to chattering life and, guided by the player, helps Wheeler solve his problems. Utilizing control of IRIS for portions of the game, players directly command robots, Martian rovers, and other highly maneuverable alien craft. RTX Red Rock also will feature a two-player split-screen multiplayer mode for head-to-head battles, capture the flag tournaments, and exhilarating races in some of the game's many vehicles.

      Sims Online Update
Posted by Big Gaz @ 8:00 a.m. NZST

Electronic Arts have released more details of their highly anticipated Sims Online PC game.

"When creating their virtual person, players will have access to almost all the hairstyles, faces, and clothing from the original game and its expansion packs. Players will also be able to create up to three different virtual people, each living in a different city. They will be able to edit the appearance of their sims frequently to ensure that they are dressed appropriately for different situations.

In the game, players will be able to pursue a wide variety of different careers in order to make money. Sims with the appropriate skills can also work for other players as a cook, entertainer, handyman, or housekeeper, among other things. Players can also start their own business alone, or they can build a company with other players. Some of the possibilities include managing a casino, owning a thrift shop, building and selling houses, and running a dating service.

The game will also include various job-related objects that will help sims make money. The job-related objects will all have several different workstations that relate to different skills, and the better a player's sim is at a particular skill, the more money he or she will receive for completing a job. Episode II: Sick Days
Posted by Big Gaz @ 8:03 a.m. NZST

The Guardian UK ran an humorous article a few days ago reporting that "Star Wars-related absenteeism could cost the US economy more than $300m in wages". Here's the full article for you.

"Chicago-based recruitment firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas projects as many as 2.6m workers will take the day off work on May 16 to see the latest instalment of George Lucas's sci-fi series in North America.

"This is a big event. It's seen as kind of foundational to their lives," said the company's chief executive John Challenger, who professes to a love of the franchise. "To be there for the opening... you know, you just need to get your priorities straight."

Challenger told Reuters that technology firms were likely to be hit harder than most because of the high proportion of geeks among staff, who were likely to be Star Wars aficionados.

"It's probably not a coincidence that the cities having the most box office success throughout the release of the last film were those with large concentrations of workers in high-tech industries," he said, referring to New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. "Cinemas in these cities are likely to do brisk business again, but possibly at the expense of workplace productivity."

The devotion of Star Wars followers is legendary. Around 5.7m people turned out to see Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace on its opening day three years ago. This time round little appears to have changed and in America fans have already been queueing for weeks outside cinemas to get their tickets. Challenger, Gray and Christmas based its projection on the assumption that a random cross section of the American population will see the movie, with 46 percent in full-time jobs, multiplied by an average daily wage of $122.80 to give $319m.

Challenger himself isn't saying whether he'll be throwing a sickie on May 16, but he does propose that workers come clean if they're going to take the afternoon off. "Say, 'Look, I'm going to Star Wars and I'm going to be inspired for the rest of the year."'

Come on guys...make sure you are honest with your bosses next week eh? ;)

Posted by Big Gaz @ 7:41 a.m. NZST

Eidos have offically announced that Hitman 2: Silent Assasin will be heading to the Xbox and Playstation 2.

"In Hitman 2 the mysterious Agent 47 is drawn back into the murder biz and is subsequently double-crossed, putting him in the crosshairs for a change. Rather than being a port of the PC version, the console titles for Xbox and PS2 are being built specifically for each console.

"The Hitman 2 team is building on the original Hitman in order to develop a stylish game built from the ground up for the advanced video game consoles," says Janos Flosser, Managing Director of Io Interactive. "Hitman 2's incredibly intensive gameplay and in-depth character interaction makes for an incredible third person based gaming experience."

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin allows players to adapt a variety of strategies for overcoming obstacles, from stealthy infiltration to 'Kill Everyone In Sight'. The game also features both 1st and 3rd person perspectives depending on your preferences and, thank God, mid-mission Quick Saves. Hitman 2 should be out this Fall."
